Do you hope to create an organization or business that leaves a legacy and has a HUGE impact on the world? Maybe you are getting nudgings about little ways to help but you don’t know what steps to take to make it a reality. Today, I bring you an interview with a woman named Elisabetta who created the Kurandza Organization to help young girls in Mozambique get an education. Hear how this little bit of inspiration started off small for her and has evolved into a full blown organization that serves with purpose!
I first stumbled upon Kurandza’s feed on Instagram @lovekurandza and felt an instant connection to what they were doing. One of my goals for 2020 was to connect with an organization that really spoke to me. I wanted to work with an organization that specifically helps to empower young women in need and does it in a loving and positive way. I couldn’t have chosen better words to manifest the organization that is Kurandza. Everything they do, even down to what the word “Kurandza” translates to, is about love!
I am excited to help Kurandza Organization and the girls, and we have many fun things planned for the month to bring awareness to their #IStandForGirls movement. Today, I bring you an interview with Elisabetta, a co-founder of the Kurandza Organization. She shares her journey with starting from the ground up, how she got inspired to help, and what important steps she took to have a bigger impact with her organization.
How to get inspired to create an impact?
Elisabetta first got inspired to help when she went to Mozambique on a Peace Corp mission. During the mission, she discovered that it wasn’t common for young girls to receive an education in Mozambique. She had become instant friends with a woman named Percina and decided to sponsor Percina’s little girl to get an education. After three years of service, Elisabetta returned to the US, and then later went back to visit Percina and her daughter in Mozambique. She couldn’t believe how much Percina’s daughter had learned! The investment in this young girl was having an immediate impact; she was reading and writing in a short period of time!
How to hold a vision to create a HUGE impact in the world
Elisabetta realized the profound effects of the little bit of support she was offering, and that’s when Elisabetta and Percina’s vision grew. They decided they wanted to help more girls in the community. They expanded their goal to help 100 girls with their education.
They met their goal and decided to double it the next year!
“We saw first hand the impact an education made for the girls in Mozambique. When they went to school, the girls came home more curious, interested in learning, and they dreamed of bigger possibilities and opportunities. An education changes the whole trajectory of their lives, giving them the knowledge and power to make a choice,” Elisabetta shared.
The key is to THINK BIGGER
Elisabetta and Percina met their goal of helping 100 girls, and realized they needed to think bigger. The ladies expanded their vision and goals as they realized the girl’s lives would improve faster if they could help them get an education plus offer them more support. They brainstormed ways they could include health education, tutoring, and home visits by staff members. The more they worked with the girls, the more they observed their bigger needs.
Kurandza Organization was born
Out of all of this, Kurandza, a non-profit organization, was born. Kurandza’s sole mission has become to provide educational and sustainable development programs for girls to become leaders in their villages in Mozambique.
Last year, Kurandza’s community rallied together to fund school scholarships (which includes school fees, uniforms, backpacks, school supplies, health education, tutoring and transportation) for 200 girls in Mozambique!
“When a girl has an education, she shares her skills and knowledge with her community, creating more opportunities for thousands of people,” Elisabetta explained.
Now every September, Kurandza kicks off their #IStandForGirls campaign to spread awareness about the importance of girls’ education!
